Paste adhesive being applied to upper dentureModern technologies allow dentures to fit better than ever before. They should rest comfortably on your gums, only relying on suction to stay in place. However, there may be times when you’d like a little more stability, like when enjoying a steak or if you have a speaking engagement. No matter the reason, a denture adhesive can be helpful, but it’s not something you should rely on. You have many types of adhesives to choose from, including powders, strips, and pastes. Here’s how to ensure you get an all-day hold using a denture adhesive.

How to Use Denture Adhesive

It’s normal to need to experiment with different types and brands of adhesives to find one that suits your needs and preferences. However, it’s important to look for one that does not contain zinc. Too much zinc can contribute to certain medical issues. Here’s how to ensure a snug fit for your dentures when using an adhesive:

  1. Clean Your Denture

Clean your dentures with a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste. Rinse them with cool or warm water. Never expose them to hot or boiling water because they can warp.

  1. Apply the Adhesive

Apply the adhesive to the underside of your dentures according to the directions on the product’s instructions.

  1. Position Your Denture

Position your dentures in your mouth and then hold them in place for about 5 to 10 seconds.

The adhesive shouldn’t overflow into your mouth. If it is, you’re using too much. A 2.4-ounce tube of adhesive should last for 7 to 8 weeks when applied to both the upper and lower arches.

How to Remove Denture Adhesive

Before heading to bed, you’ll need to remove and clean your dentures. Here’s how to get the adhesive off your dentures:

  1. Gargle Salt Water

Gargle with warm salt water for about 30 seconds. It will loosen the seal of the adhesive.

  1. Remove Your Dentures and Brush

Rock your dentures back and forth before taking them out of your mouth. Brush and rinse your dentures before placing them in an overnight soaking solution.

  1. Clean Your Gums

Clean any adhesive residue from your gums using a soft-bristled toothbrush or cloth and toothpaste.

If you are depending on an adhesive to keep your dentures in place, it’s time to see your dentist. Your mouth will change shape over time and your dentures must be relined to maintain a snug fit. Your dentist will make the necessary adjustments to stop slipping and irritation, which will help you get the most from your dentures and keep your mouth healthy.
